    Default Can a False Online Confession to a Crime Result in a Criminal Investigation

    Can the police investigate you for making fake posts online in which you confess to a crime, and potentially bring criminal charges?

    Yes, a real investigation can be started based on what you posted whether you claim it real or not.

    What's more, I know of at least two cases where online posts on a message board have resulted in the poster being convicted.

    The police usually don't even need a reason to start an investigation. Cause is only needed further along in the process.

    Had a case very close to me a few years ago. Computer geek boasted he had a teenage girl in his dungeon on a net forum. Turns out he did. I think he got 20 years for that.
