Default Will a Juvenile Drug Record Keep You From Becoming a Police Officer

My question involves criminal records for the state of: Illinois

When I was 13 years old, I was arrested for "distribution of cannabis". I underwent a year of probation with drug tests twice a month, never failed one. I have still to this day never experimented with drugs. It truly was a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. It was expunged once my probation was over. I want to work towards making law enforcement my career. However, I don't want to waste my time and money on education, if I won't be able to get a job as a police officer. Will an expunged felony from when I was 13 years old prevent me from being hired?

    Thanks.

I think its pretty unlikely, but I am sure that more knowledgeable people will respond shortly.

However, you could certainly contact several police unions who would be able to answer the question.

You may want to check and see what an expungement does for you in your state. If this offense - even expunged - does not preclude you from owning or possessing a firearm, then it is probably not an automatic legal bar to employment as a peace officer. But, that does not mean that an agency cannot use that as grounds to disqualify you for their process. While it is unlikely that a 8+ year old offense that occurred when you were a teenager will prevent your entering law enforcement, it is possible that it might.

If you have kept clean, have a good employment history with positive references, and schooling behind you by the time you apply, you should be okay. Again, provided that the expunged felony does not preclude you from firearms possession under state or federal law.
