Default How Can You Eliminate Your Debts

My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: new york

I'm with a religious organization. We're helping someone who has a large amount of credit card debt. I think the amount he owes is over $100,000. He was working as a free-lance handyman and trying to avoid his creditors but didn't do well and was on the verge of being out on the street. We are giving him a temporary place to stay.

I'm wondering what can be done to eliminate his debt? Would a homeless person be able to remove a debt without going through bankruptcy? He obviously can't afford a lawyer.

Also, is there a statute of limitations on credit card debt?

    Thanks for any help.

Bankruptcy is honestly his only option at this point. In the overall scheme of things bankruptcy attorneys are not very expensive.

I'd concur that bankruptcy is really the only move. Bankruptcy lawyers are very competitive with one another so I imagine you could price shop and get yourself a better hourly deal.
