Default Can You Get a Medical Imaging Study Without a Prescription

Apologies if this is not the correct forum.

My question involves public health law in the State of: CA, TX

I know most if not all imaging centers require prescriptions when insurance is in play, but if one were to pay out of pocket (cash/without insurance) could he/she legally obtain an MRI without a prescription from a referring physician? ie. are there any laws in place requiring a prescription for imaging as there is for pharmaceuticals?

    Thanks

Nope, if you pay for service you can obtain service.

At least with the local radiological outfit I deal with, it's not even a prescription. It's just an order from the referring facility as to what they want. It's not as simple as saying "take an MRI of this guy's head." Absent being able to articulate the exact studies you want, you may have a hard time getting a MRI facility to perform the test.

Note that MRIs are frequently done with injected contrast. That is going to take a doctor's order of some sort.

Nope, no laws prevent you from walking into MRIs R Us and buying one for cash.

Although why you would want that kind of serious diagnostic procedure without first being evaluated by a doctor is beyond me.

You may also find the "list" price for an MRI study a bit higher than you would imagine. We're talking about multiple thousands of dollars.
