What's the nature of the debt? Most debts would be uncollectable after this much time simply by virtue of the statute of limitations.
It was an old jelwery store that is no longer in business
This is over your purchase of jewelry on an installment contract... how many years ago? Did they ever get a judgment against you in court and, if so, when? Is the current collection effort actually by them (which would be odd if they're out of business) or by a collection firm which has purchased their old accounts? All transactions occurred in California?
It was a payment installment contract that took place around 1988. It is not being collected by them it sounds like a collection firm that purchased their old accounts. Yes in california.
Consider sending them something along the lines of the sample letter from this thread. The limitations period was probably four years.
