You started a confrontation with a child. His mother objected. That surprises you?

If you don't want to be accountable for injuries you cause to other people, don't start physical conflicts with children when their parents are around, and if a confrontation you initiate escalates toward being physical back off and call 911.

Thank you for the responses. As I mentioned, I regret the situation but I am stuck with it.

The charges I have will stand and our DA is not adding additional charges. This is simple battery, that is it.

I realize the mother could seek compensation after the criminal verdict but I also agree that any attorney will look at this a little different. This just is not a case where I simply went and attacked someone. The property was in a commons area, not their property, and they initiated the contact. I am certain that all parties regret the situation and it is still possible the mother will not pursue the charge but I have to prepare for the worst.

One thing that might drive it is the charges I am pushing on the stolen bike. We have conspiracy with 3 teens, theft on 3 teens, etc. Now it might seem harsh for me to push this matter but I assure you, after seeing how this young man acted towards me, knowing full well he stole it, tells me things about his character or lack of. The other teens involved are actually teens I caught and detained on a year ago for shattering windows in a building with rocks!! These guys are all headed down a dark road. If I ignore it, they will continue on this path.
