Default Prank Calls are Being Investigated as Terroristic Threats

I did something incredibly stupid and prank called several businesses in a major city. I live outside the city in the country. Over the course of like 2 weeks. The most stupid thing is that I didn't bother to *67 most of them. I made jokes and subtle racial innuendos, but never threatened anyone's life. It was a stupid idea.

I have gotten two voicemails in two days from a detective that wants to speak to the owner of the (my) phone in reference to "terroristic threats." He is working the case, and made it clear on the second message that it was a felony. I never threatened anyone's life or anything that would cause legitimate panic. I was just basically annoying. Anyways I never answered those calls. He hasn't mentioned anything else, he has my real number. But I don't think he knows who I am yet, nobody has shown up at the doorstep.

I am wondering if he will drop the case if I don't respond at all. I am willing to destroy my phone and claim that it was stolen a month ago (it really was, but I got it back), and suggest somebody else has it. I don't know how serious this is...don't know if he has any recordings of the calls..will he go to the trouble of acquiring my phone records? How persistent do investigators pursue these cases?

Any advice would be grand, I've just become very discomforted over this the past two days...

Do you think it sounds like the detective will proceed with the case? Like get a subpoena for my phone record?

It's possible. We cannot predict the future, unfortunately.

Destroying your phone and lying will only hurt you not help you.

    Watch this video:

    Then make your own decisions.

How would it hurt me? Would that story not check out?

I just really want to know what my best options are:

    1. I don't have money to hire an attorney.
    2. I don't know if the detective has any insane recordings that would incriminate me, and if he would make me do some sort of voice recognition.
    3. I don't know if my phone record would show my locations at the time I made the calls

You have the right to remain silent; use it

you have a right to be represented by an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed to you.

Cell Phone calls are usually traceable to their geographic location. If nothing else, the cell towers it was picked up by is available. That really narrows down where the phone was.

Chances are the detective has other cases he is working on right now. But, when he finishes with them and can devote more time to yours, he will be at your door.

You need to find something constructive to do and grow up. Of course depending on how this case plays out, you may not have the use of a phone often and then for only a few minutes.
