My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: California

Here's my situation. I am signed up for automatic rent payments to my landlord, through their website. This rent payment system collects both the apartment rent, as well as charges for utilities. Rent was due by 11/4. I received email from landlord today (11/7) saying that their online rent portal is broken. The system failed to collect my rent for November ($2645), however, it collected the utilities charges ($95). I responded to the email saying I am unable to pay through check and requested that they retry collecting payment when they fix the broken system. The community manager called me on the phone, and asked me to pay by check by Thursday (11/12), or they give me an eviction notice. I am going to be out of the US for a while. I offered to pay through any alternative payment options, such as wiring money to their account, or using another online option they may have. Landlord said no, a check is only what they can accept. My wife is still in the US, but she is unable to give the check before Monday (11/16). I asked for time until Monday (11/16), so my wife could give them a check, but the community manager said no, it must be Thursday (11/12), or we get an eviction notice.

Am I legally in the right? I believe I have done my part rightfully, and I am even willing to work with the landlord to make the payment. Their own system is broken, and they are making me suffer because of it. Please help!
This may seem silly but make sure that you check your bank account to make sure that the rent was not collected.

Also, is the landlord you speak of the actual owner of the unit or are they a management company? Its just really odd that they are not willing to accept some other method of payment when its their own system that is broken. Plus, a check is a far less secure (for them) method of payment. It makes me wonder if the management company has had a fallout with the actual owner of the property and has been locked out of the bank accounts and online portal.
