Parents can stop their minor children from dating anyone. Especially an adult. There are penalties if an adult doesn't stay away from a child if the parents state for the adult to do so.

Just dating is not illegal.

Parents may give consent to dating but the sex is still illegal in TN until the minor is 18.

Ask yourself this: What's wrong with a 25 year old woman that she has to date a 17 year old child? (Yes, "child" in the eyes of the law.)

There is no law against “dating.” The two of you can go to dinner, a movie, walks in the park, etc., and not violate the law. However, you are still under the control of your parents. So, if your parents object to you seeing her then she has a problem.

What is illegal in Tennessee is for an adult to have sexual intercourse with someone under age 18. So, if you have sex, she commits a felony offense in Tennessee. The consent of your parents will not make her having sex with you legal.

Once you turn 18 these limitations go away.

If you asked her out and the first thing she said is, we need parental consent because you're a minor, that sounds a lot to me like she's not interested but she didn't want to hurt your feelings.
