How Does Emancipation Work in New York

My question involves juvenile law in the State of: New York
My best friend is turning 16 soon and would love so much to escape where he lives with his guardians, the are verbally abusive and I am fairly certain they are physically abusive too. They work him to death, making him practically run the farm they live on. They wont let him leave and so he decided he'd like to become emancipated asap. Would you mind telling me exactly how to and what is needed to become emancipated?

New York does not have a statute by which a minor can go to court and come out emancipated.

If he is living on his own, with the express or implicit permission of his parents or guardians, making better than average grades in school and paying every single cent of his own expenses, the state of NY *might* deign to consider him emancipated. Or they might not.
