Unhappy Landlord Shuts Down the Air Conditioning Over the Weekend

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: California.

I just moved into an apartment (affordable income) and everything was going well but when I got in the air conditioning did not work in the apartment. I called since it was the weekend I got a clerk. I was told they shut the AC off on the weekends. It was 90 degrees in apartment even with fans going, I pay for electric, they pay all other utlities. Is this legal? Is there anything I can do? I looked over the lease and there is nothing stated in there. AC not needed for living but it has been really hot in the Southern California. Thank you.

Makes no sense to me that a LL shuts off a service ...is the service in the lease?

Having air conditioning is not required in California in order for a rental unit to be deemed habitable, but when air conditioning is provided the expectation is that the landlord will keep the unit in proper repair.

Should we infer here that the heat and A/C are central -- that your unit does not have its own furnace and air conditioning unit? What are other tenants doing or saying about the issue? Are you permitted to install a window air conditioner in your unit?

Given that she says she looked over the lease and there is nothing there, I'd say no.

Just out of curiosity, is your building totally comprised of residential units, or is it one where there are re4sidential units mixed in with business offices that are primarily open Monday through Friday?
