Default Roommate Wants Contribution to Utilities After Months of Failing to Collect

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: California

I just left a lease where I was renting a room at a house that was owned by my roommate's parents. The rent was paid directly to the owners. The utilities were paid for by their son, and then myself and our other roommate paid our portion of the utilities directly to him.

Only problem is, the son hasn't done his part to let us know what the monthly utility bills were. Therefore, we haven't been notified to pay utilities in 2 years despite at least a few months of nagging him to tell us at the beginning. Since I have left the house to get a new place, their son is now telling me I need to pay utilities for the two years that he hasn't billed us.

Am I on the hook for my portion of the bills? If so, what would be a fair decision in terms of how much to pay, and when to pay it?
