Default What Things Can I Take when I Get Emancipated

My name is Alyssa and I live in Michigan.

I have many beloved things in my possession that I have worked hard for to get. I have movies that I spent my own money on, books I bought and got as gifts, my laptop and iPad both from winning a reading contest, and my sweet baby girl Pickles(a cat) I got for free.

I am planning on getting emancipated sooner rather than later and my cousin said because my father lives with our uncle's for free, doesn't have any running vehicle in his name, has no job or income to support me or himself, and my other relatives give me clothes.

What I'm concerned with is all of my stuff. He Boughy the bed and the bedframe in the room but that's all. Everything else my grandma bought me or I bought me. I want to know if when I get an officer to escort me to get my things what I will be able to take and what I will not be able to take.

I also want to know if since my father does not have the property in his name and he is not paying rent if he will be able to prevent me from taking everything that is mine.

None of that is relevant to your getting emancipated, save for your need to get clothes from your relatives -- something that suggests dependence and weighs against emancipation.

In order to emancipate you must convince a court that you already manage your own financial affairs, and are capable of managing your personal and social affairs. You must prove that you can support yourself, and public assistance (general assistance or aid to families with dependent children) can't be considered.

Leaving aside the fact that you have given no indication that you qualify for emancipation, nobody here is going to be able to promise you that your father will let you take what you want when you move out, or that the police will accept your claims as to what is your property that your father should not be permitted to retain. If you actually reach the point, you can consider waiting until he goes out (e.g., to the store) and moving out with your stuff (and only your stuff) when he's not their to argue.

Alyssa, I don't think you understand what you've already been told.

There will be plenty of time to figure out what you're allowed to take with you if you actually are emancipated.

Since the odds that it will happen are somewhere between slim and none, and since slim just left town, I wouldn't spend a whole lot of time worrying about it.

Alright thank you for the advice I will keep that in mind. Also how I qualify for emancipation at all is not relevant at all to what I asked. I asked about what I can take when I get emancipated not what my chances are at getting emancipated.

I would like to have everything known and planned before everything happens.

Also you didn't answer the question that I asked. Please refrain from replying if you are not going to be helpful in the slightest. Thank you.

Oh sweetie you don't get to choose who responds.

You're not mature enough to understand that we're actually helping you. We're not telling you what you want to hear, that's true - but that's not what you NEED to hear.

Okay, we'll play your game since it really doesn't make any difference.

In the approximately .000001% chance that you are emancipated, you can take with you exactly what your parents allow you to take. No more, no less.
