    Default Emanciption and 18

My daughter is 18. She has not completed high school. She would have graduated in June. She has moved out to live with her boyfirend. She want's to go to school where he lives. The school has told her that she has to be emancipated. I have custody of her. I wanted her to at least finish school where I live. I tried to talk to her but she want's to live with her boufriend. I went to the police and they told me that there is nothing that I can do becuase she is 18. To be honest she would climb out her window anyway to be with him. I've called the courts and no one seems to know anything. I was told that she is not emancipted until she is out of school but They also said that there is nothing that I can do because she's 18. She has to be 19 or graduated from school at 18.

She want's to be emancipated to get in to school. I'm not sure how to help her accomplish this. I happy that she is at least trying to finish school.

    Thank you for the help.

To be emancipated, she must be working full-time and supporting herself 100%.

I'm not sure what the school is telling her, or why. She's 18, so she has reached the age of majority. Further, Ohio doesn't have an emancipation statute, and recognizes minors as emancipated only if they become lawfully married or are on active duty military service.

Can you explain what it is that is causing a problem, and what you believe "emancipation" would achieve?

She just want's to live with her boyfriend. She having a problem getting into school. There telling her that she needs to be emancipated to get into school where her boyfriend lives. Everything is fine here she came to visit today. He is her first real boyfriend and she is his first girlfirend. He was kiked out of the house in my area so she wanted to live where he lives. It is too far fro her to get to. And no, I didn't approve she was taught better than that. I went to the police and he said that there was nothing that I could do, she's 18.

You didn't really answer Aaron's question, but what I would tell the woman is that she made her bed, let her sleep in it!

I suspect that they mean that as long as she is a dependent of your household, even if living outside of the home she cannot claim residency in their school district so as to enroll there.

Call them and ask what they mean. I don't think your daughter will figure it out by herself.
