    Default Question about job opportunities

I want to be a psychologist but I have a petty theft charge from 5 years ago (I was an adult). I know that there are some criminal charges, which will automatically disqualify someone from getting a license in psychology. Will my petty theft charge disqualify me from getting a license?

I don't think you have anything to worry about...as of yet. In most states, you wouldn't be refused a license unless the crime was such that it could interfere with your ability to ethically practice as a psychologist. That notion is a little subjective but I don't think your crime would be an issue. Crimes such as physical/mental abuse, sexual exploitation, etc. would most certainly be considered differently.

Each state requires candidates to take their own exam. Some states may be stricter than others but, as long as you have no further problems, I think you need not be too concerned. If you happen to be convicted of a similar offense in the future, I think you might have a real problem.
