My question involves criminal law for the state of Michigan.
Im 18, I was caught shoplifting at jcp. This is my first offense and the total value of the merchandise was $26. I was out of the store when the jcp loss prevention security came after me. They took me to a room, she took my info, picture and made a copy of my ID. The lady recovered the merchandise and said that it was undamaged and in salable condition. She then gave me a civil demand notice and an 'issue slip' stating that I must attend court on the 4th and said I had to sign them. She kept saying if I cooperated I wouldnt go to jail. She didn't call the police and let me go after about 15-20 minutes. Im really confused and stressed out about this, I know it was a dumb choice but please I just need help. What's going to happen and what should I do? If she already assigned me a court date does that mean this isn't just a civil case anymore? Shouldn't the company lawyer decide whether I go to court or not? She's only the loss prevention security so Im really confused. Please help me.
