Default How Much Should Your Fine Be Reduced if You Produce Your License for the Court

My question involves a driver's license issued by the State of: Washington.

I received a penalty of $550 for driving without a valid license. As is stated throughout this forum, proof of valid drivers license to the court and they shall reduce the fee to $50. When I asked the clerk why it was reduced to $128 and not $50, they said due to other "fees" but didn't specify.

Does anybody know where the additional $78 is coming from?

Also, I forgot to renew my license in large part because they did not send me a renewal notice, likely because I moved, although the DOL still had my correct address on hand. Being that I'm 24, this is my first renewal, so I wasn't anticipating the need to renew my license. Ignorance is no defense, but I wonder what you guys think about the failed renewal notice nonetheless.

    Thanks!
    Adam

They don't hunt down addresses. You are required to change your address on your license when you move. If you failed to, they did not have your correct address since as far as they are concerned, until you change the address on your license, you live where it says on your license.

I understand. Strange to me that they knew I moved when I went to renew my license.

Regardless, I should have made this post just about the $128. Hopefully someone can answer that question. :-)

Did you pay the fine and fees? Most courts provide a detailed receipt itemizing the individual costs.

They're not required to send you renewal notices either, it's purely a courtesy.

It appears however not only did you not inform the state of your new address, you let it slide for more than a year.

The court will probably explain the fees, but $50 sounds like the actual fine and $78 is "court costs."

I've had fines reduced and waived, but I still ended up paying the court costs. $78 is a bargain.
