My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Rhode Island

I'm being presented with a contractual obligation by my employer for a ladder shift position change (that I had requested when it was made available). The contract stipulates I will remain working for 3 years with the office or owe $20,000(for training). What are my legal grounds besides the more obvious "decline the position" approach. This position would give me the experience to work with experts in my field, but at the risk it costs, what (if anything) can be done? I had already advocated for some alteration to the new contract, but my employer has refused.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!
