    Unhappy Whether to Request a Hearing Over Proposed Termination

    My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: New jersey.
    I work in a small town for the police Dept as a dispatcher.This morning I received a letter stating that the town council would be meeting on Tuesday to discuss a recommendation for my termination. The letter was dated on the 21st to be hand delivered but I didn't receive it until I had finished working on the 24th. It also says that I have to either sign it request a public discussion in this matter or if not the would consider and discuss the matter in private. So as of now I am on unpaid leave and not to report back to work. I have no idea what this is all about or how to respond to this. Do I request a public hearing or let them have a private meeting without me? With this being so sudden and on memorial day weekend I don't even have a chance to speak to an attorney. I never received any warning or was told of any issues so this comes as quite a shock.

    Prior to this letter a little background info: had a personal matter with another coworker who also happens to be my next door neighbor between a fight with our dogs that resulted in the death of her dog. At the time the lutenant became personally involved and harassed me for over a week about having my foster dog signed over to animal control. This was no longer a police matter but he persisted in calling me and pressuring me.Even after I had told him I was going to speak to an attorney he kept calling. When i expressed how absolutely devastated i was he made a comment about the entire situation being "disgusting". He was in daily contact with my coworker who insisted that my foster dog be put to sleep.These conversations all took place from headquarters on recorded lines. Long story short, the dog who i was fostering at the time was sent to a sanctuary to live by the organization whom I was fostering him for. Ever since this happened the lutenant stopped calling me like he had previously done to see what days I was available and instead assigns me the weekend graveyard shift. My coworker gets twice as many days and whatever days she chooses to work which is usually the 6am-2pm shift.She's also taken a week off to go on vacation even though we are both part time employees. Recently another dispatcher complained to the mayor and director about the lutenant's favoritism with certain dispatchers and threatened to go to the dept of labor. Now this....I just have no idea what to do at this point or what is going on. Should I bring all this up?
    Ive had a migraine for the entire day worrying about this. Please if anyone could advice I would be forever grateful.
