    Default Is Damage from a Garage Door a Comprehensive or Collision Claim

    My question involves a traffic accident in the State of: California

    Recently by my own mistake I closed my garage door and it hit the rear trunk lid of my new 2015 car. If I decided to file a claim to repair the damage would the damage be considered comprehensive or collision? The damage would probably fall below the $500 deductible on the collision but more than the $100 deductible on the comprehensive. Thanks for any feedback. Joe

    Default Re: Damage a Comprehensive or Collision Claim

    You would have to read your policy to make sure but mine has pretty standard wording:

    "Collision" means the upset of "your covered
    auto" or a "non-owned auto" or their impact
    with another vehicle or object.
    Loss caused by the following is considered
    other than "collision":
    1. Missiles or falling objects;
    2. Fire;
    3. Theft or larceny;
    4. Explosion or earthquake;
    5. Windstorm;
    6. Hail, water or flood;
    7. Malicious mischief or vandalism;
    8. Riot or civil commotion;
    9. Contact with bird or animal; or
    10. Breakage of glass.
    If breakage of glass is caused by a "collision",
    you may elect to have it considered a loss
    caused by "collision"

    If your policy is worded like that then your damage is due to collision since it's not specifically listed under "other than collision."

    In case you were going to ask, no, the garage door was not a "falling object" although there's no harm in trying to make that argument with your claim rep.

    By the way, get an estimate before you report this to your insurance company. If the total repair cost is under $1000 you might want to pay for it yourself since your policy would be surcharged for 3 years for an at-fault claim. The insurance company would get all the money back, maybe more, and you'd have the claim on your insurance record that other companies would have access to should you seek more competitive rates at some point.
