    Default Can Somebody be Punished for Helping a Runaway

    My question involves juvenile law in the State of: michigan
    i am turning 17 years old in 3 weeks. ive had planned to move out of state but my mom refusues to let me and tells me i will be punished if i leave because my parents have a joint legal custody agreement. would i or the person im staying with be punished and is there anything she can do if i leave? i have 3 jobs. i do good in school. i just want to live my dreams.. i need help.

    You are a minor. Anyone who helps a minor run away can be prosecuted, and its a felony, as far as I am aware.

    You are going to have plenty of time to "live your dreams" once you become a legal adult.

    As long as you remain a minor, your mother has the right to find out where you are and drag you back home. However, Michigan's 'harboring a runaway' law only applies when the runaway minor is under seventeen years of age.
    Quote Quoting MCL Sec. 722.151 Aiding or abetting violations by juveniles, or harboring runaways prohibited.
    No person shall knowingly and wilfully aid or abet a child under the age of 17 years to violate an order of a juvenile court or knowingly and wilfully conceal or harbor juvenile runaways who have taken flight from the custody of the court, their parents or legal guardian.
