Battery of friend by ex-boyfriend

My friend has been hit hard by her ex boyfriend. She got into an argument while on the streets and got unexpectedly grabbed and slapped hard to the sidewalk. She has bruise and broken glasses and has been examined by a doctor. The guy just walked to his car and drove away while she was down. From what I know, there was an exchange of personal criticisms before the incident but none of them were insults. We also know that he has hit his past girlfriends and none of them have come out and done something about it.

What we want to know is :
1. How strong a case do we have. What are the possible consequences if he were to be prosecuted and what do we need to do so.

2. What are other alternative legal options avoiding imprisonment and ruining his life. Ideally, we want to give him a warning he won't forget while giving him one more chance.

What is she waiting for?

If she chose to sue him civilly for her glasses and medical expense, the judge is going to wonder why a police report was not made.

If she chooses to file a report, it will be up to the prosecution as to whether or not there is a strong enough case to pursue charging him criminally.

He sounds like he is in need of anger management.
