Default What to Do if Your Neighbors Have Noisy Cars

My question involves real estate located in the State of: New York

For a few months now, my neighbor's son idles his muffler less car in his driveway for about 5-30 minutes. This happens between the hours of about 8 o'clock (sometimes earlier) to midnight (occasionally later). He frequently revs the engine and will take off down the road at an insanely loud volume. Some of his friends will often come down with their cars, and they will idle and shout across the driveway because it is so loud. None of the cars have mufflers. Just now, around 8:30 at night, he idled in his driveway for about 5 minutes, revved his engine about 5 times, then took off. About a minute later, he came back from down the street and continued to idle in his driveway. It, to my parents downstairs, sounded like something heavy fell on the ground. It is insanely loud. What can be done? A police report over the phone would require a deputy coming to my house. We can't do that as we are a close knit, middle class neighborhood. What else can we do?

    Nothing.

If your "close knit, middle class" neighbors won't correct the objectionable behavior after a polite request and you don't have the stones to call the police then you get to suck it up and live with the noise.

Oh, there is one other thing. Pay a lawyer a few thousand dollars to take the family to court to try and stop the objectionable behavior.

Probably got a reason for not doing that, too.

adjusterjack is right. If you are a close knit neighborhood, then you are not the only ones affected by this behavior. Surely the parents are aware of the discourtesy to their neighbors, so I'm wondering why this has continued long enough to bring you to this point.

Why have you not involved the parents, at least? Perhaps they don't mind the noise (I have neighbors like that regarding their own noise levels), so need it brought to their attention that it is objectionable to others.

Has _any_ attempt been made to address this?
