My question involves unemployment benefits for the state of: MI
I was laid off from my job and I filed a unemployment claim on the same day. Michigan's new website is very deceiving and they hide the submit button at the very bottom which you have to scroll all the way down to. Because of this I was initially denied payment because they said I didn't file and I dint report to Michigan works building within so many days of filing my claim to have my resume verified on their website ( which I actually did do immediately after I got laid off). By the time I go it all straightened out I had gone without any money for over an month and was late on everything and was getting calls from mortgage company and creditors all day long. The woman at the unemployment agency was helpful in helping me file a re-determination but said that the time period between when I was laid off and when I actually got my claim straightened out was lost money and I couldn't get it back. I found a job 9 weeks later but I still filed for unemployment in an effort to get extra money to repay all my past due bills. I filed for 14 weeks but was out of work for 9 weeks. Now the unemployment agency has caught up to this and wants additional information to see if I intentionally made a false statement or misrepresented the facts to obtain benefits. I know what I did was not right. What I need to know is how to answer the letter.
It asks
Did you intentionally provide false information to obtain benefits you were not entitled to? YES NO
Why do you believe that you were entitled to these benefits?
1: I needed the money
2: I had not received my payment when I reported for benefits
3: I reported the net dollar amount instead of the gross dollar amount
4: I did not understand how to report my earnings or separation reason
5: I thought my employer reported my earnings for me
6: Someone else certified for me
7: Someone else filed my claim for me
8: other
What would be the best reason for the overpayment and claiming more weeks than I was entitled to without saying that "yes I committed fraud"
