My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York
My friend(18 yrs old, lives in nyc) got caught with about $90-100 worth of stuff. She said they took the stuff and didn't call the cops, take her picture or make her sign anything. She can still shop there and they just wrote her name down. They let her off because she was a college freshman and they didn't want to ruin her record over something like this but made her promise not to steal again. Also they took her address at school just so her parents wouldn't find out and said she'd receive something in the mail. What does that mean? Does she have to pay? How much? I think she'll have to pay a civil demand if anything? Will she have to go to court? What will happen to her? She's been really scared and nervous lately and I feel really bad. Even though there is no excuse, she's still a good person and I think she may be doing this as a result of her depression (I heard that stealing is something that people with depression sometimes do) idk if that makes sense but she normally doesn't act like this. Anyway, thanks for any help.
