I am going on the premise that the OP was truthful when he said he proposed delaying his start date by two days and the hiring manager agreed to modify their agreement on that basis. What I am suggesting is that, if the two-day delay was not acceptable, the company had a duty to tell the newly hired employee that before he resigned from his previous employment, and not wait until he had incurred irreversible harm.
Again, even if we take that position, that was not the promise that caused the employee to quit his former job. As has already been explained, he cannot claim to have resigned based on a promise that had not yet been made.
