Default Medical Neglect by a Minor's Guardians

My question involves child abuse or neglect in the State of: Michigan
My girlfriend has bad heart issues. She needs open heart surgery because recently her heart has been getting worse. Her grandparents, who have custody of her, have forbidden it until she graduates college. We are both in highschool; she's 16 and I'm 17. her grandmother emotionally abuses her, calling her fat and yelling at her whenever she has any sugar. it has gotten to the point where my girlfriend has stopped eating, sometimes for days at a time. Her grandmother constantly tells her she is a burden and a waste of money. The grandmother makes her pay for her own groceries, gas, and clothes, with no monetary support whatsoever, even though they are extremely wealthy with millions in the bank. The grandmother calls her stupid if she doesnt have straight a's but has gone out of her way to ensure my girlfriend fails. I need a way to get her out of there by calling child services without having repercussions. If child services fails and my girlfriend remains there, her life will be hell. they will take all of her money out of her bank, they will revoke her trust fund, and God knows what else. i need help because my girlfriend means the world to me and i need to help her.

You have NO options, and neither does she, other than calling Child Support Services.

I think that you mean child services rather than child support services.

If the child really does need open heart surgery and that is being denied to her, then contacting them is critical.

I'm seeing lots of teen drama. How does OP know the things he's alleging are true? Has he SEEN the physicians' reports? Has he SEEN the bank statements? Has he HEARD the grandparents?

If GF is indeed, overweight, then her grandmother may be trying to keep GF from having to have heart surgery by encouraging weight loss/healthy eating habits.

But like I said first sentence: Teen Drama.

Are you really willing to dismiss it that lightly? I do not think that I am. I think it warrants an investigation by child services.

When minors are deprived of appropriate medical care by their parents or guardians, it is common for the medical care providers to seek court orders to compel the provision of appropriate care. Here, we're told that there's a very serious medical condition, and the child is seeing doctors such that it's known to be "getting worse", but the doctors have apparently not deemed the situation so critical as to seek a court order.

Also, assuming we're not speaking of a case where the child has some form of disability that would cause guardianship to continue into adulthood, the grandparents cannot "forbid[] it until she graduates college", as the girlfriend gets to make her own medical decisions once she turns 18. In the latter case, the child would have recourse through the courts.

Is it possible that there's something here for protective services to investigate? Yes. 1-800-4-A-CHILD.

    You're right - I did.

But, like the other posters, I seriously doubt that the need is really as critical as the OP is trying to claim - otherwise her medical providers would be in touch with the courts.

A phone call costs nothing, but I suspect things are not quite as they're described here.

The boy only knows what he is told. The girl will have to have insurance on herself to have the surgery after she graduates from college. If the child's health was at risl, the dr would have called CPS. I totally agree about the teen drama. It seems that the girl is the one who doesn't care about her health since she is overweight and doesn't watch what she eats. I can understand the grandmother yelling at her when she eats sugar, she is overweight with a heart condition. If the heart condition was that serious, chances are the child wouldn't be attending school, she would be homebound. If the boyfriend calls CPS, I hope he is ready for the girsl grandparents to not allow the girl to see him. The money she has obviously is meant to take care of her. Those poor grandparents.

There is also no law barring a minor from seeking life saving treatment if it has been deemed necessary. I thing the kid is getting hustled.
