Default How to Handle a Stalker

My question involves criminal law for the State of: Georgia and Florida

I am currently being contacted by someone who I do not want to have anything to do with. This person has mostly contacted me over the internet for several years now, initially finding me on Myspace, but he has also emailed me, sent me messages on Facebook, even contacted me on a dating website. He wants to be my friend, but I do not want to be his. We accidentally had one interaction in person. We just so happened to be attending the same college and we came across each other in the library. Most recently, he found my phone number on a publicly listed voter registration list (at 17, I registered to vote and I had ignorantly included my number). I don't feel unsafe or that my life is in danger, but it is still harassment and he has ignored my requests for him to stop contacting me. I recently moved out of the state so I am unsure which state to call to resolve this issue. He lives in Florida and I currently live in Georgia. I don't know if I should call the police in his area or the police in my area (or both). Anything would help. Thanks! I also only know his first and last name, but I have no other information about him.

Most statutes regarding stalking or harassment can be enforced in either the location where the unwanted communications originate or where they are received. So, if these communications rise to the level of a crime, it could be prosecuted either in Georgia (where you receive them) or in Florida (where he originates them). However, it is more likely that the police in the jurisdiction where he is will take action.

The real question is whether his communications rise to the level of a crime. I would suggest researching the language of the stalking/harassment statutes in Florida. If you believe that his actions qualify as criminal acts, contact the police department local to where he lives and file a report.

You can read the Florida Stalking statute here.

You place yourself on the Internet in social networking like Myspace and Facebook and dating websites and then complain when someone posts to you. I could understand a concern if this person was making threatening posts but you say he want to be your friend (that is the idea of social and dating sites).

What have you done to stop the "harassment"? Have you blocked the poster on your Myspace, Facebook, dating and email accounts? Have you changed your phone number or email address?

You could simply ignore the poster.

Set your phone to ignore his number. Set his emails to go to your spam folder. Stop feeding him and he will go away.
