My question involves a driver's license issued by the State of: Minnesota and California.
A close friend is from Minnesota but currently stationed in California. Her license expired some time ago. The DMV in Minnesota says her license is still valid with a valid military ID. While stationed here, she purchased a used car that was registered in California. She is looking to transfer registration to her name. The problem is the California DMV told her she needs to get a California drivers license in order to register the car here. She argued that her Minnesota license is still valid with a military ID and the DMV says that's not the case. They told her that for her to legally drive in California, she needs a valid Minnesota license and that her military ID does not make her expired out of state license valid in this state, and in order for her to register her car, she needs a valid California license. She's trying to avoid getting a license in California, as she does not plan on staying here at the end of her service next year. Minnesota DMV told her that she doesn't need a new license in Minnesota because of her military ID. I know the law changes state to state so I'm trying to get the correct answers for her. She's spoken with both DMV's, police here in California, and administrators on base. No one had direct answers for her. She cannot just hop a plane back to Minnesota to renew her license. One thought we had was to register her car in my name, since the other person who drives it besides her is me anyways. Can someone provide the answers we need? The reg on the car expires next month. Please provide the applicable vehicle code if possible.
Thanks!
