    Default SSA Can't Verify That I'm a U.S. Citizen

I'm applying for financial aid for grad school, and the school told me that FAFSA said I can't be verified...

I'm pretty sure this has happened before, not just for financial aid, but for tax and other stuff. Weird, since I've gotten called to jury duty, gotten a security clearance (to intern) for government entities.

Well, I did some searching, and it seems like after one becomes a U.S citizen, one has to go to the SSA in person and ask them to update the status. Is this really true? Like, why don't they update it automatically - seems really inconvenient.

According to my parents, they didn't go update. So, what sort of documents do I need to bring with me? Also, can I verify my parents as well, or do they have to come in?

When you called SSA or went down there to ask them this question, what did they say?

You do have to update SSA when there are any changes. It does not happen automatically.

The database that holds your Social Security card history has to be changed to show that you are a US citizen. INS/Homeland Security issues your Naturalization Certificate. The Social Security Administration administers your Social Security card record. They are both part of the US government but they are separate agencies. You are not legally required to correct your Social Security records so INS/Homeland Security is not going to do it for you.

A new SS card (same number) will be issued. If you ever change your name legally, you may have to do this again.

Yes, being a grown up and taking care of business has inconveniences.

You will need your original naturalization certificate and a current photo ID. Or a current US passport. And complete a request for citizenship change.

Your parents are adults and they have to take care of their own business.
