Unhappy Giving 30 Days Notice in a Month With 31 Days

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of California. I gave my landlords my 30 day notice on December 01,2014, but this month has 31 days. My landlords are saying I have to be out on the 30th or they will charge me another months rent...Can they do this with the rent that I paid on December 1st taking me to December 31st and I pay rent once a month? I have never had this problem before and it's my understanding that if I am not out by December 31st THEN they can charge me another months rent because I am PAID UP until December 31st. I have had my lease with them for over 7 years and it is now ending on a very sour note. I have other questions, but I'll ask them one at a time.
This is my 2nd question and I thank for any advice on this as well.

    Your landlord's an idiot.

But you should have specified the move out date instead of 30 days.

Anyway, if you don't count 12/1 then your 30 day notice ends on 12/31.

If you want a court fight to get your deposit back then move out on 12/31.

If you want to avoid a pissing contest then move out on 12/30.

Moving will probably take you several days anyway, which means you'll already have a place before 12/30 so why get into a hassle over one day?

    I know, it's the principle.

    Well, principle can be expensive.

    Up to you.
