    When/if he is arraigned he can request appointed legal counsel if he cannot afford one.

    Thank you but what are the guidelines for him getting a state defense lawyer & is it even worth it at this point?

    The guidelines vary by county. Some counties might require a means test, others may just go with your word on the matter. A few counties actually have a Public Defenders office he can contact for info. Otherwise, HE can ask the court when he goes in for his arraignment.
