Default When Does Living Together Become a Domestic Partnership

My question involves a relationship in the state of: California

    Hi,
I have lived with my boyfriend for almost 8 years together, and wonder if we qualify as domestic partnership.
He says we do but I am not so sure.

Since I don't work, he claims me as a dependent on his taxes and pays for everything.

    Thank you for your advice.

    Ivy

For what purpose? To whom would you be presenting yourself as domestic partners?

Agreed with CBG's question. There is a reason she is asking it. But past that point, CA has a formal DP registry. Legally the only way to be considered a DP for CA purposes legally is to get on the registry. Now even if you are on the registry, that would effect some things and not others, so looking at the exact reason why you think this is importance is key. If we knew why you wanted to be a DP, it would be easier to give you a good answer.

I want to know my situation from legal point of view. I also want to know what to tell him when we talk about it. There is an issue with estate planning and inheritance.
Also I want to know what will happen to me if anything happens to him. He says our assets will all automatically go to me because we are domestic partners.
I have doubts because he is against marriage, we don't even do taxes together (supposedly we don't need to) but I don't buy it.
I haven't been working since he provides for both of us and tells me I don't need to. So if anything happens, I will have no income of my own.
I am worrying about my future.

May we take it that you are not on the registry mentioned above? Are you on his health insurance?

No, the only thing that show we are together is the same address and my name in his taxes as a dependent.

Then I would say that you are not domestic partners from a legal standpoint.

Ok, thank you. I thought so.
So basically, if anything happens to him, I will have to move out and provide for myself and his assets will go to his family (he doesn't have a will).

That would be my take on it.
