My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York
I was caught shoplifting at a Banana Republic Store when visiting New York City (I am an Illinois resident). It was for a bracelet that could not have been more than $30. I was stopped before I left the store and brought into a back room. I signed a Trespass Notice for Gap Inc. and an NRMA form notifying me that my information will be provided to the Retail Theft Database. No police were involved (maybe because it was 8pm and they wanted to close the store by 9pm or maybe it was due to the low amount of the item). My questions are:
- Will I receive a Civil Demand letter requesting to pay a fine? They made no mention of such, but as I read this forum, it seems to happen to most.
- I believe the LP associates said the NRMA registry would only apply if I applied for a job at Gap Inc., but I can't be sure. I was frazzled and I'm not sure the LP associate was 100% sure. Will this show up in other types of background checks?
- There were no police involved and no one mentioned filing of charges. I just signed the Trespass Notice and the NRMA form. Will I be notified later for prosecution?
Please help!
