Default Shoplifting Consequences With No Police Involvement

My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York

I was caught shoplifting at a Banana Republic Store when visiting New York City (I am an Illinois resident). It was for a bracelet that could not have been more than $30. I was stopped before I left the store and brought into a back room. I signed a Trespass Notice for Gap Inc. and an NRMA form notifying me that my information will be provided to the Retail Theft Database. No police were involved (maybe because it was 8pm and they wanted to close the store by 9pm or maybe it was due to the low amount of the item). My questions are:

    - Will I receive a Civil Demand letter requesting to pay a fine? They made no mention of such, but as I read this forum, it seems to happen to most.
    - I believe the LP associates said the NRMA registry would only apply if I applied for a job at Gap Inc., but I can't be sure. I was frazzled and I'm not sure the LP associate was 100% sure. Will this show up in other types of background checks?
    - There were no police involved and no one mentioned filing of charges. I just signed the Trespass Notice and the NRMA form. Will I be notified later for prosecution?

    Please help!

There's a pretty good chance that you will, but we can only talk about the odds.

Odds are it will be disclosed in a search by any NRMA member.

If there is a prosecution, you can anticipate that you will eventually learn of it.

The civil demand isn't a "fine" but a civil remedy for the damage you caused. This merchant is one that does regularly send out civil demands apparently.

I think you misunderstood the LP. The Banana Republic and Gap stores are owned by the same company. They don't even have to go to the NRTD to find out you stole from them. The NRTD would apply if you applied to another NRMA member. If you are turned down due to an NRTD report, they are required to tell you. The NRTD follows the same rules as credit agencies. Information on that here: http://www.geninfo.com/contacttwo.asp
