Honestly, strange things happen. I really doubt that someone who was known by name and particulars at an establishment would do anything so stupid as to deliberately shoplift at that store.
While unintentionally, a person can forget something under their shopping cart or forget to place something on the conveyor belt or maybe walk out of a restaurant without paying, that is not the same thing as walking out of an Apple store with a hard drive under your arm. But I do agree that strange things can and often do happen.

OP was at the Apple store for a genius bar (basically tech support and not there to purchase something) and then carries a hard drive (an expensive item) out of the store under their arm, gets into their car and drives home not realizing the hard drive is under their arm and was not paid for. That would be a strange thing to happen. I would think it's kinda hard to drive home with a box tucked under your arm.

The sad thing is that Walmart probably threw away that can of beans because they would have no idea if it had somehow been tampered with or not.
they were garbanzos. And I bet you are right. Kind of funny though, because can you imagine the effort that would be involved in tampering with a can of garbanzo beans...

I agree. While I think an absent minded/distracted person can make a mistake, some things are easier to believe might have occurred mistakenly then others.

It sucks but your taking a risk by returning it. Maybe mail it back with a made up return address.

Just go to the store with the item, walk up to an associate and say "I want to buy this". Don't tell them any info other than you want to pay for it. Then leave with the item and receipt. Problem solved.

That's clever. Never know if he could set the alarm off or it's in the system stolen (it's a long shot). Imo,best to avoid the store and forget about it.
