Default What Information Must a Landlord Provide About Your Security Deposit

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: New Jersey.

SECURITY DEPOSIT - We moved in to this rental property, and 41 days later, only by a request of myself, our landlord sent me a text to say where my security deposit was. He only gave the address of the bank, no other details that are required. Also he is supposed to pay us a yearly deposit of the interest, but again, he has done nothing. Which does worry me. What steps can I take to make sure I get the deposit back. I thought he was supposed to write a letter, signed by himself, posted to me before the 30 days notifying me where the deposit is? Forgive me, but I am new to renting in the USA .

Here's the NJ security deposit statute.

Note that if the LL fails to properly comply with the provisions of the statute you must give the LL written notice of the failure to comply and he will have 30 days to comply.

In other words, he might be new at this, too, and just made a mistake. Tell him about it and see how it goes.

As for getting your deposit back, the way you make sure of that is you leave the place in the same condition that you got it in.

I suggest that you take dated photos of every inch of the place and keep them for comparison when you move out and do the same when you move out.

Meantime, familiarize yourself with the landlord tenant guide and statute (starts at 46:8). The guide is a good one because it cites statutes so you can look up the exact wording. Never rely on just a guide.

Thanks for your reply. We have been in this property over 2 1/2 years now, I obviously didn't want to bring it up when we first moved in as I didn't want to "rock the boat" so to speak. I am aware that he should of given me the yearly interest amount too, which he hasn't. He has been renting properties for just under 8 years now so I am assuming he does know the way things work, or he should lol. I will have a read thru the guides, thanks

    Default Notice of Deposit

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: New Jersey

Hi, my landlord has never officially told me where my deposit is being kept, I have no paperwork and never given me the yearly interest. Is he breaking the law? Can I ask for my full deposit back and then ask for 1-3 times the amount if I was to take him to court. I'm aware that deposits are supposed to be protected by law etc.

I look forward to your replies
