Default Charged Vehicle Registration Fees After Moving, Failed to Return the Plates

My question involves vehicle registration or title in the state of: CT

Not sure if this is the right subforum. Basically I moved from CT to CA exactly 2 years ago for a new job. I moved to CA, established residency, got a CA drivers license, registered my car at the CA DMV, switched my car lease so that the sales tax piece of the monthly payment was based on CA tax rate, switched over my car insurance to CA, etc, etc. I never got around to returning my plates to the CT DMV. 2 years later and CT is trying to bill me for $2k in unpaid car tax for time period after which I moved I'm guessing all because I never officially returned the plates. There's nothing else tying me to CT. I stopped paying CT state taxes on my paychecks when HR changed my address in the system right after I moved. I don't own a house in CT. I don't have family in CT. I haven't stepped foot in CT since I left. What do I do? I'm freaking out. I've been ignoring the problem thinking it will go away, but my lease is almost up and I need to get this straightened out. I'm so upset right now that I can't even sleep.

Ignoring them will only increase the amount they claim. Contact the relevant department and attempt to get the amount eliminated. Ignoring it won't make it go away.

Wanted to give an update. BMW told me that I need to give my plates back to CT DMV and show them my CA registration, and CT DMV will put on the receipt that I started in CA on the begin date of my CA registration (Mar-13). Then give that information to BMW and they'll restate my billing statement so that I pay CT taxes from Oct-12 to Mar-13. Roughly 6 months or so of taxes. Moral of the story is you pay CT taxes until you register your car in CA.

CT is terrible when it comes to car tax. People in CA complain that it costs $300 per year in registration fee. Compare that to CT where I was getting billed $500 every 6 months in car property tax.

I hope you get it straightened out.

But it seems to me that you should have found out about all this while you were living in CT.

I suggest you study the CA requirements to make sure there's nothing you miss about CA.
