Default Received Misaddressed Correspondence from a Federal Agency

I received in the mail an order form that has a header reading "Homeland security, us customs and border protection" "entry summary." it looks highly suspicious and is and appears to be for a $10,000 import for cosmetics. The name on the form appears completely fake to me "Dong Wang"? but it was sent to me and has my actual address on it. should I consult an attorney? Should I contact the company? Some one please consult on how i should precede.

If it's not addressed to you, just mark NO SUCH ADDRESSEE and stick it back in the mail.

Throw it in the garbage. I bet if you look really carefully you will see some very tiny print that disclaims it is from the govt. It's a scam but if they don't disclaim it is a violation of the mail laws and would mean big trouble for whoever sent it out.

Just curious though, is it asking you to send money to get the products out of customs?

I disagree with the advice to throw it away. It might be needed for evidence if the scam is more complicated than it appears at this moment.

Ok, agreed. But I would like to know what the letter wants OP to do. Is there a customs fee to get the stuff our of customs or come and pick up your stuff? What is the purpose of the letter?

    And this:

    "
not a bill retain for your records
When would the US Govt send that out?

No in fact, there is actually a red ink stamp on the first page of the packet that states "not a bill retain for your records" I have scoured over the document twice and can't find any disclaimer of govt involvemnt, also there is a second page (among the many) from the US Department of the treasury that says "fda may proceed." there is something wrong here.

so what do you want out of this? If you are not the addressee, send it back as suggested. If you wish take a photocopy of all the contents of the letter that you opened that was not addressed to you.

At the present moment I so plan on sending it back as suggested and in the mean time will figure out how to do that on monday when usps opens. By the way I have done business with this particular company and was expecting an invoice in the mail by them anyway for a small order of t shirts. The operator was very sarcastic and rude when I ordered the shirts and believed that it was a joke on me when I saw the name Dong Wang on the envelope.

I was also trying to be a good citizen by checking this thing out, what if I get more of these? or there is genuine wrongdoing here? I have no evidence of that but in my own interest of of time and energy I will simply send it back. Of course it will be a full 24 hours before the post office opens so I will still be checking this thread for more posts if anyone had more to add. Thanks for all the replies so far.

Consult a lawyer specializing in Federal crimes like import fraud and mail fraud.
