Question How to Collect on a Divorce Settlement if Your Ex- Leaves the Country

My question involves a marriage in the state of: NY

My husband and I had a really messy divorce in NY. Since the divorce wasn't going his way, he liquidated all the assets (house, car, etc) and fled the country. A final divorce settlement order was made earlier this year after he was already gone, in which he was ordered to pay me a settlement. How do I go about collecting this amount if my husband fled the US and took everything?

Do you know where he is? Is his return likely?

He's an immigrant from Georgia, so it's possible that he went back there. If I go with my gut, I'm almost certain he won't be coming back.

If he and all of his assets are in Georgia, then you're going to have to collect from him through Georgia's legal system. For that, you will need to speak to a lawyer in Georgia about what it would take to enforce a U.S. divorce judgment through the Georgia court system, and would also need to weigh the amount of money you are likely to recover against the cost of the legal process.

Unfortunately Georgia does not have a reciprocal agreement with the US and I'm not seeing anything from the state, either.

Even if one existed, it would invariably take a lot of time and a lot of money only to find that the whole thing was futile.

(This assumes that a property settlement qualifies as "family support")

That's what I was thinking beforehand, but I just wanted to see what other people had to say about the matter. Thanks anyway
