My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Kentucky
My husband recently received a noticed of a medical debt for $2,000+ from a sleep study that he had three years ago that he was unaware of. At the time, he was on his father's insurance, and the company was paid. However, insurance went back and took back their money due to him being right at the cutoff for being on his father's insurance. He was not notified of this.
As he has investigated, the office sent him a bill to an old address (which was forwarded to his new residence) where family still resided. If a bill was sent there, he was never given it. The company says that they sent several letters and attempted to call him once, but couldn't reach him. They sent it this month. The sad thing is, he has since made appointments for the future and has recently been in contact with this company prior to the debt being sent to collections. He asked why it was not brought to his attention when his account was opened to make the appointment or why he was not refused an appointment, and he was told that it was not their policy to do so and too bad for him.
$2,000 is an astronomical amount for us to pay right now. Not to mention, his credit is probably ruined. I'm still in school and he is paying student loans, and we are a young couple just starting out. The office offered to discount 20%, but that is still so much money, in addition to the bill already being in collections. This came out of nowhere. Is there anything we can do?
