    Post Teenager Caught Shoplifting

I was caught shoplifting at JcPenney. Im 16, I live in San Diego, California and I took a $40 shirt. I dont know what the consequences are going to be and im sooo nervous. I was looking up some consequences I was wondering if this is going to be erased once I hit the age of 18. Im planning on going to medical school and I guess you can say I made one big mistake. If this stays on my record i'll never have the chance to do what I plan on doing in the future. I guess you can say im taking this a little too seriously but I really want to know whats going to happen. I dont want this to stay on my record. Please help!

There are numerous threads on same topic you can read through them. Since your a minor the bulk of the penalty will be on your parents! Check and see if diversion is offered that will help you keep a conviction off your record. Here likely outcome.

    Fines
    community service
    probation
    ban from store
    Civil Demand

These are the common things first time shoplifters face

Did the store say they were going to press charges? They might just go after civil demand.

Even if they do press charges, I'd say it's VERY likely that you can have it removed from your record once your 18.

Information on sealing a California juvenile criminal record from the California Courts:
    Quote Quoting Juvenile Records
Your Juvenile records do appear on your criminal record. Upon your 18th birthday, you are eligible to petition to have your juvenile records sealed. Once sealed, no one can gain access to them and they will be completely destroyed five years from the date of sealing.

Juvenile records are not automatically sealed upon your 18th birthday. You must affirmatively petition the juvenile court to have them sealed. You can do this by filing out a form and filing it with the juvenile court in the county in which you were convicted. Contact the juvenile court in the county you were convicted, and ask them to send you a copy of the form used in that county. Check to see if they have any special filing requirements such as additional photocopies or the need to serve copies of the petition on any government agencies, and get the correct information for filing by mail. Usually, there is no fee.

If you graduated from the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Division of Juvenile Justice , your juvenile conviction(s) will have been dismissed as part of your graduation. If you do not petition to have your juvenile records sealed and destroyed, they will remain on your record until your 38th birthday, then they will be destroyed.

JC Penney has a policy that they prosecute everyone no matter the age or dollar amount. Its thier policy.
