My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: California

Hi,
I got a mail a few weeks ago from a student housing agency that they demanded money from an apartment that apparently I signed up for in beginning of June, however 2 weeks later I mailed them back and told them that I had changed plans and wont be moving to the U.S. anymore and therefore they could release my leasing contract. Nothing were paid at that time.
So now they threaten me by email to contact a debt collecting agency for this matter, should I be worried as an international student without a social security number and no incentives to stay in the U.S. after my education?

What if someone else signed the electronically student apartment lease in my name from my home country, would that contract be seen as invalid?
