My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: New York
I recently lost my job and applied for unemployment. After waiting for my checks I received a letter stating that in 2003, 2004 and 2005 there was an overpayment of unemployment insurance and NY would forefeit all of my unemployment checks until the $9,000 balance is paid off. NY state has also taken my federal and state tax return.
I never received these payments and was told that there is nothing I can do. The state also said that they have no backup of these payments and cant tell me anything other than what their computer printouts show me.
I have requested a hearing to dispute this claim and want to know how i can prove that I did not receive this money from almost 11 years ago. Most people only keep records for 7 years and I am not even sure what records I would need to provide to prove this.
Please advise on the best way to handle this matter.
