My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Massachusetts
I screwed up with a few credit cards back around 5 years ago.
I've recently managed to pay off all my debts except for one account for about $1500.
The last time I received any correspondence regarding it was about 3 years ago. I called the collection company, and they informed me that the debt had been sold and provided me with the name of another company. I could find very little information regarding the company. All I found online was a phone number. When I called, the line was disconnected.
So I'm at a dead end now and don't know what to do. The debt is still listed on my credit report as in collections.
So, without being contacted by a company, is there a way to find out who I owe this money to? And if the company that did have the debt somehow went out of business, does that mean I no longer owe the money to anyone? And if that is the case can I have it removed from my credit report?
