My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Maryland

Hi, I'm writing to inquire as to what is my best defense, and what are my options when disputing this medical bill. I've already written a response to the court which I will present in the event that it does go to trial. I already went to the first court date which had me speak to the plaintiff's attorney. He handed me a document which had information which would allow me to request a financial assistance application from the hospital.

I am confused as to why I am the party being sued. Since my father was the one who signed for the services, the attorney even was confused when he said to me that I had signed the document. I immediately mentioned that it wasn't my signature, and he responded by saying that under federal law it didn't matter because I was the individual rendered the services to. Originally before we had all these financial problems in the family my father took care of my medical bills, since I am able to be on their policy until I am 26.

So, I wanted to know what my best course of action is. The thing is my parents are bankrupt, and can't help me with the bill, and they are incredibly stressed out and can barely make it on their own at the moment. I understand I was the one who received the services, but I don't even recall what it was for, nor do I know what I am being charged for. The bill is quite hefty, and I feel like they are taking advantage of me in a way. Despite the fact that I received the services I was never consulted or appropriately notified of the costs of given a itinerary of the bill. I feel like if I had an itemized bill with all the information, then I could feel more comfortable with the 10,000 they are asking for. Not to mention the fact that they are suing a unemployed college student who already has a ton of debt is making things worse for me.

I appreciate any help ahead of time, and apologies for the lengthy - possibly melodramatic post,

thanks
