24 year old grad student from NJ; so i decided to switch the tags of 2 shirts in a dept store. i did this while in the fitting room. i paid for the merchandise (about $35 less) and was stopped by LP as I was leaving the store; they talked to me on the whole way up to their little room, and asked me what happened. i told them what i did but that it was my first offense (and it was). they seemed really understanding about it. i paid my civil demand of $150 and they told me that this would not go on my record but that i would never be allowed back into any of their stores.
I am freaking out because I am reading about how people are getting legal notices and whatnot in the mail. i have so many questions.
1. is it legal to have a video camera taping you while in the fitting room?
2. what is the civil demand in nj and its implications?
3. is there a statute of limitations in regards to how long they have to file criminal charges?
4. what is the likelihood of them pressing charges even after telling me that they would not?
someone please help... I am freaking out!
