My question involves criminal law for the state of: Arizona
First I’ll give the important information that is most needed:
Two nights ago I, and my friend who was with me, were arrested at walmart for shoplifting.
We’re both being charged with a Shoplifting Misdemeanor 1, the amount of the items stolen was $119, and we are both first time offenders.
Our court date is set for August 14
I am fully aware of what I did was wrong. I’m a broke college student who is on extern right now for Dental assisting and I’m terrified that this one huge mistake I made will mess up all the hard work and effort I made for my life in going to school and achieving so much with it. I know that this doesn't matter, but I made the Dean’s list and I’m just afraid all my accomplishments with have been for absolutely nothing because of this grave mistake.
I know that my very first step should be to contact a lawyer, but as stated before, I have no money currently to pay for one. And I have no idea how to get a public defender BEFORE my court date so I know what my options are and how to proceed. I have never been to court before, other than for possible jury duty, so I have no idea what events ahead will occur in that area. Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
