My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Nebraska
My roommate and I came home late on the 4th of July to an apartment that smelled like something was burning. We went upstairs and saw smoke. Since our apartment is directly above a three car garage and our neighbors had been grilling and lighting fireworks in the driveway earlier, my roommate went down to see if the smoke was coming from there while I looked around the apartment to see if there was something burning. My roommate called me down because the carbon monoxide detector was going off in the garage and there was a melted bucket that held spent fireworks that had been the source of the smoke and smell. We opened up all of our windows and the garage doors, and we put the bucket outside. Since carbon monoxide had been detected in the garage and our apartment had smoke in it, we did not feel safe staying the night in our apartment so we got a hotel room. We called and talked to someone from the apartment management business that night just to tell them the situation, and they said that it sounded like the situation was resolved. My roommate and I were just wondering if our landlord should pay for our hotel stay.
Thank you for any advice.
