Default Can a Bar Accept a Birth Certificate as Proof of Age

My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: Louisiana

Firstly, I apologize if this is the wrong sub forum, but this seemed like the most correct one. I work as a bouncer for a bar in my city and I usually accept passports as valid identification along with state issued IDS. However, a few weekends ago someone showed up with a copy of their birth certificate and a student ID to back it up. The copy had a state seal along with matching information. I would have usually asked a manager if it was okay, but the establishment was very busy. Of course, I never got in any trouble, but was that legal for me to accept the information? The student ID just has the name and picture of the person.

While you are NOT required to have a safe server certification (it's only required for the servers/bartenders), I STRONGLY suggest you get one. If you had taken the course, you would know the answer.

As far as bouncing goes, there's no LAW that says anything about id's.

As far as serving someone alcohol, a student ID and birth certificate are NOT going to cut it when you get arrested for serving an underage person alcohol.

Your servers/bartenders are FOOLS by the way if they rely on you to screen out the underaged.

I did that to get into a bar my freshman year of college to see a friend's band.

    When I was 18.

Used a friend's BC and a fake college ID that I made at Kinko's in 10 minutes. It would tale a little longer to fake the ID these days, the University stopped issuing cheap laminated cards, but it can still be done with a little creativity and technical knowledge.

No, don't accept anything but GOVERNMENT ISSUED ID - driver's license, state ID card, passport, US Military ID card, US Permanent Resident card. If the Government didn't issue it, you turn them away. Unless you want to be held personally responsible when they turn out to be underage, of course. That's a crazy huge fine, and you'll lose your job over it.

Yeah, I understand man. However, I knew the guy that was using the birth certificate and student ID was of age? Would that still be illegal to let them in? Thanks

Reread my prior post. There are no law in Louisiana barring underage from being in bars. It's up to your bar management as to what they want to do to allow admission.

It is the person who SERVES the minor who is going to end up with a criminal charge for serving someone who is underage. A birth certificate with or without a student ID or recommendation from the bouncer ***WILL*** not save themselves from a conviction. Only one of the state government issued photo IDs (drivers license, state ID, passport) that isn't an obvious fake (or someone else's) will show proper diligence on their part in being a responsible server.
