Hi, (Washington state near Seattle)
I'm writing to see if anyone can determine if I am getting discriminated against. I generally work on contract in IT as the sole provider since my wife is chronically sick. Within the past 2 years I've needed to be home some of the time to take care of my wife. Being in IT these jobs have the technology to allow me to telecommute or work remotely.
I have always been upfront with these jobs before I get hired to let them know that my wife is ill and I may need to work from home sometimes to help her. At first the jobs say "no problem" and hire me, but then later they start to say that they want me in the office as much as possible and to preferably not be at home. I've even been pressured out of two jobs and given bogus excuses as to why they are cutting my work. The jobs always claim I do a great job, but they don't seem to like me working from home when necessary, partly because for no other reason they just seem to want their employees to be at the office. We don't have family nearby to help my wife when she's sick, so I have to be home to help her. Lately, even new jobs seem to be getting nervous about hiring me because previous jobs have laid me off because of it.
We seem to be getting excluded since we don't have kids, and it is my wife who is sick, not some child or elderly family. Having these jobs cut so often is also messing up with our insurance which puts a greater burden on my wife's health.
How can we ensure new jobs won't do this again? Can I do anything against the previous jobs that have already done that? What sort of advice or services or organizations deal with this sort of thing to help us?![]()
